He was a dedicated farmer and man of letters who worked to improve and popularize agriculture in Hida Province (Gifu Prefecture) during the late Edo and Meiji periods. He was the second son of Okada Riharu of Kokufu Village, Yoshiki County, one of the wealthiest farmers in Hida. He was adopted into the Otsubo family and changed his name to Jinsuke, later changing his name to Niichi. He promoted land consolidation, rice drying using the "hasa" method, the popularization of tea, rapeseed, and paulownia, the improvement of mulberry and corn, and the double cultivation of potatoes. He participated in the first National Agricultural Conference in 1881 (Meiji 14) with Tanahashi Goro (Mino Anpachi County). He continued to preach "thinking agriculture," and at the same time, he wrote senryu and kyoka under the name Reishi-an Kikusen, making him a typical wealthy Hida farmer. 幕末明治期,飛騨国(岐阜県)の農事改良,普及に努めた篤農家,文人。飛騨で一,二を争う豪農吉城郡国府村岡田理春の次男。大坪家へ婿養子に入り仁助と改名,のち二市。耕地の区画整理をはじめ,「はさ」方式による稲の乾燥,茶・菜種・桐などの普及や桑・とうもろこしの改良,馬鈴薯の2回作りなどをすすめた。明治14(1881)年の第1回全国農談会に棚橋五郎(美濃安八郡)と共に参加。「考える農業」を説き続け,他方で霊芝庵菊仙と号し川柳,狂歌をよくした彼は,典型的な飛騨豪農である。著述に『農具揃』や『明治見聞誌』『履歴七部集』などがある。<参考文献>『国府村史』,丸山幸太郎「『農具揃』現代語訳・解題」(『日本農書全集』24巻)
