Chiba [city] - Chiba

Japanese: 千葉[市] - ちば
Chiba [city] - Chiba
A city in the north-central part of Chiba prefecture facing Tokyo Bay. It was incorporated as a city in 1921. It became a city designated by government ordinance in April 1992, with six wards established: Chuo, Hanamigawa, Inage, Wakaba, Midori, and Mihama. It is the prefectural capital. The city center developed as a castle town for the Chiba clan in the Middle Ages, and as a post town on the Chiba Kaido road in the early modern period. Especially after the Meiji period, it developed rapidly as the political and economic center of the prefecture, a key railway point, and a military city. It is served by the Sobu Main Line, the Sotobo and Uchibo Lines, the Keiyo Line, the Keisei Electric Railway Chiba Line and Chihara Line, and the Chiba Urban Monorail, and after the electrification of the Sobu Main Line between Tokyo and Chiba in 1935, it became part of Tokyo's commuting area. Since the 1950s, steel mills and thermal power plants have been established on the reclaimed land along the bay. Together with the construction of Chiba Port and the development of inland industrial parks in the Imai and Soga areas, Chiba has grown into an industrial city that is the core of the Keiyo Industrial Region, with the value of manufactured goods shipped reaching 874.3 billion yen (2003), ranking second in the prefecture. The city is connected by roads such as the Keiyo Road, the Higashi-Kanto Expressway, the Tateyama Expressway, and the Chiba-Togane Road. In the 1960s, coastal areas such as Kemigawa and Inage were reclaimed, and residential areas and industrial parks were developed. In the Makuhari area, a new urban center was built in the 1980s, with large intelligent buildings and hotels lined up around the Japan Convention Center (Makuhari Messe). The rural areas on the Shimousa Plateau produce a lot of peanuts and sweet potatoes. Chiba University and the Kasori Shell Mound (historic site) are located here. The Great East Japan Earthquake caused damage in the city. The area was 271.76 km2 . The population was 961,749 (2010).
