A port city facing the Atlantic Ocean in the southwest of the Republic of the Congo in west-central Africa. Population 576,000 (1992). Located about 390 km west of the capital, Brazzaville, it was founded by France in 1883. A railway line to Brazzaville was opened in 1934, and an artificial harbor was constructed between 1934 and 1939, after which it developed into a commercial and industrial city. There are factories producing plywood, aluminum products, soap, food processing, shipbuilding, etc., and the city exports lumber, cotton, palm oil, palm kernels, groundnuts, coffee, etc. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
アフリカ中西部,コンゴ共和国南西部にある大西洋に面した港湾都市。人口57万6000(1992)。首都ブラザビルの西方約390kmに位置し,1883年フランスによって建設された。1934年にブラザビルに至る鉄道が開通し,34‐39年に人工の良港が建設されてから,商工業都市として発展した。合板,アルミニウム製品,セッケン,食品加工,造船などの工場があり,木材,綿,ヤシ油,ヤシ核,ラッカセイ,コーヒーなどを輸出する。
