The largest commercial and industrial city in the French department of Guadeloupe, a Leeward island in the Caribbean Sea, and the first port city. Population 26,069 (1990). Founded in 1654 by Jews who came from Brazil. Located on Grande-Terre, which together with Basse-Terre make up Guadeloupe, it is located near the southern entrance to the Rivière Salée, a shallow inlet covered with mangrove forests that separates the two islands. The port of Pointe-à-Pitre has a wharf that can accommodate ships of over 18,000 tons, and Rezée Airport, the air gateway to Guadeloupe, is located 3 km away. カリブ海のリーワード諸島にあるフランス領グアドループ県最大の商工業都市で,第1の港町。人口2万6069(1990)。ブラジルから渡って来たユダヤ人によって1654年に建設された。バス・テール島とともにグアドループを構成するグランド・テール島にあり,両島を隔てるマングローブ林におおわれた浅い入江リビエール・サレーの南の入口付近に位置する。ポアンタ・ピートル港は1万8000トン以上の船舶が接岸可能な波止場をもち,3km離れた近郊にはグアドループの空の玄関レゼ空港がある。
