James Ensor

James Ensor

Belgian painter and printmaker. Born in Ostend on April 13th. His father was English. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Brussels from 1877 to 1879. In his early years, he modelled his work on Manet and the Impressionists, but was also influenced by Turner and Symbolism. In 1880 he returned to Ostend, and in 1883 he became a member of the group "XX", painting Flemish-style landscapes and interiors in both realistic and symbolic styles. From around 1885 he gradually established his own style of painting, while at the same time moving away from the trends of the time. His works were based on fantastical motifs such as ghosts, masks, skeletons and monsters, and were embodied in vivid colours and bold deformations, evoking the works of Bosch and Bruegel. He had a particular fondness for masks, and in his works "Christ's Entry into Brussels" and "Self-Portrait in a Mask" he expressed the bottomless energy of the crowd and the sense of isolation of the ego in a pessimistic way that anticipated the 20th century. He died in Ostend on November 19, 1949.
