A glass of plagioclase composition that is amorphized by the strong shock waves generated during meteorite impacts. It is a direct transformation from solid to solid at relatively low temperatures. It is known to occur in impact craters on the Earth and Moon, and is commonly found in meteorites that have been severely shocked. It was first observed in achondrite meteorites called shergottites. It is also produced in shock experiments or nuclear explosion experiments. It has a higher density and refractive index than ordinary glass of the same composition, and can be distinguished from ordinary glass by the lack of patterns or holes caused by liquid flow.
