A city in the mid-west of Ibaraki Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1958. The castle was built by the Kasama clan in the 13th to 16th centuries in the center of the Kasama Basin. After several changes of feudal lords in the early modern period, the city developed as a castle town for the Makino clan, a post station on the Mito Kaido road, and a town in front of the shrine of Kasama Inari Shrine. The Joban Line and Mito Line branch off here, and the Joban Expressway and the Kita-Kanto Expressway pass through the city. The city produces vegetables, tobacco leaves, and lumber, and its specialty products are Kasama ware and Inada granite. Kasama Inari Shrine has believers throughout the Kanto region, and is famous as one of the three major Inari shrines along with Fushimi and Toyokawa. The stone walls of the castle ruins remain on Mt. Sashiro, and there is an azalea garden in the surrounding area, which is loved by the citizens. There is a habitat for the Kataniwa Himeharu cicada (a natural monument). In March 2006, the city incorporated the towns of Tomobe and Iwama in Nishiibaraki County, and the city hall became the former Tomobe Town Hall. The Great East Japan Earthquake caused damage in the city. The area was 240.40 km2 . The population was 79,409 (2010). → Related article Gujo Domain Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
