Jayadeva - Jayadeva (English spelling)

Date of birth and death unknown. An Indian lyric poet active around the 12th century. Born in Bengal. As a court poet to King Lakshmanasena, he was one of the five jewels of the dynasty. An ardent worshipper of Vishnu, he left behind the Sanskrit lyric poem Gita Gobinta (Song of the Cowherd), consisting of 12 chapters. The theme of this poem is the story of Krishna, an incarnation of Vishnu, being raised as a cowherd and falling in love with Radha, a cowherd woman, but behind the sensual love lyric is said to be a preaching of the relationship between gods and humans. He was a pioneer of Vaishnavite literature, making full use of rhetorical techniques such as the use of various rhythms.

生没年不詳。12世紀ごろ活躍したインドの叙情詩人。ベンガルの生まれ。ラクシュマナセーナ王の宮廷詩人として、その五宝とよばれた詩人の一人。熱烈なビシュヌ神の崇拝者で、12章からなるサンスクリットの叙情詩『ギータゴービンタ』（牛飼いの歌）を残した。この詩は、ビシュヌ神の権化クリシュナが牛飼いとして育てられ、牛飼い女ラーダーと恋をする話を主題としているが、官能的な恋愛叙情詩の背後に、神と人間との関係を説いているといわれる。ビシュヌ派文学の先駆をなし、各種の韻律を用いるなど修辞的技巧を駆使している。
