A village in Ena County, on the eastern edge of Gifu Prefecture. Population 1,042 (1995). The village is located in the upper reaches of Kawakamigawa, a tributary of the Kiso River, and apart from a small amount of lowland along the river, the majority of the village is made up of steep mountainous terrain including Mt. Oku-Mikaidake (1,811m). Most of the village area is covered by forest, making it rich in forestry resources, and is the birthplace of Tono Hinoki cypress. There is a lumber mill within the village, and picture frame production is also thriving. Part of the village area belongs to Urakiso Prefectural Natural Park, and is home to the Yumori International Trout Fishing Ground and a national camping village. [Ueda Masako]

A village in Minamisaku District, central eastern Nagano Prefecture. Population 4,957 (1995). Located in the headwaters of the Chikuma River, nearly 90% of the village area is in the Kanto Mountains. There is a small area of ​​flat land along the west-flowing Chikuma River, but it is surrounded by mountains over 2,000 meters above sea level, such as Mt. Kinpu, Mt. Kokushigatake, and Mt. Kobushigatake, and it was once a cold village known as an "island on land." In 1936, when the Koumi Line of the Japanese National Railways (now JR) was completed, highland vegetable cultivation was introduced, and after World War II, taking advantage of the highland conditions, it became a large-scale producer of highland vegetables, mainly lettuce and Chinese cabbage, and the production value per farm reached the highest level in the country.

Kawakami [village]

A village in Yoshino District, eastern Nara Prefecture. Population 2,821 (1995). Located in the mountainous region in the central Kii Peninsula, it occupies the upper reaches of the Yoshino River. National Route 169 runs along the V-shaped valley of the Yoshino River, and the village borders Mie Prefecture to the east via the Daidaka Mountains. Scattered within the village are forest gap settlements, which were created by clearing land on the gentle slope of the mountainside, and lumber yard settlements, which were built in convenient locations for the collection and distribution of lumber. The central settlement is Sako in the northwest, where the Kamisha Shrine of Nyukawakami Shrine, known as the god of rain stopping and rain prayer, is located.

Kawakami [village]

A village in Maniwa County, at the northern tip of Okayama Prefecture. Population 2,457 (1995). Located in the headwaters of the Asahi River, the village area consists of the Hiruzen Basin and the foothills of Mt. Giboshiyugasen, which is connected to Mt. Daisen. The settlements of Nosuke and Gohara were once post towns on the road to Mt. Daisen. Dairy farming has developed since the area was designated a national intensive dairy farming area in 1954, with the Chugoku-Shikoku Dairy College in Nishikayaba and a prefectural dairy cattle breeding facility in Mikigahara. Hiruzen radishes are also produced in large quantities, utilizing the volcanic ash soil of the plateau. Tourism development is also thriving, centered on the northern Hiruzen Plateau, which is part of Daisen-Oki National Park, and the Hiruzen-Daisen Toll Road runs through the area, connecting Mt. Daisen and Hiruzen.

Kawakami [village]

A village in Abu District, central Yamaguchi Prefecture. Population 1,250 (1995). Surrounded by small mountains such as Goban-ga-take, the Abu River flows west through the village. Located among the mountains, forestry is thriving, producing high-quality cedar and cypress, and shiitake mushrooms are also cultivated. Yuzu cultivation is also popular. Ayu fishing is also practiced, but the catch has decreased since the completion of the Abugawa Dam. The Abugawa Dam was completed in 1975 as a prefecture-run flood control and power generation dam, and six villages and part of Chotokyo Gorge are submerged in the bottom of the artificial lake. There is Baigakuji Temple, known for its temple bell and garden, as well as the History and Folklore Museum, and Chotokyo Gorge, famous for its autumn leaves, has been designated a prefectural natural park.

かわかみ【川上[村]】

長野県中東部,南佐久郡の村。人口4957(1995)。千曲川源流域に位置し,村域の9割近くが関東山地に属する。西流する千曲川沿岸にわずかに平地が開けるが,金峰山,国師ヶ岳,甲武信ヶ岳など標高2000m以上の山々に囲まれ,かつては〈陸の孤島〉といわれた寒村であった。1936年,国鉄(現JR)小海線が全通したころから高原野菜栽培が導入され,第2次大戦後は高冷地の条件を生かしてレタス,ハクサイを中心とする高原野菜の大規模な産地となり,農家1戸当りの生産額は全国最高水準に達した。

かわかみ【川上[村]】

奈良県東部,吉野郡の村。人口2821(1995)。紀伊半島中央部の山岳地帯にあり,吉野川上流域を占める。吉野川のV字谷沿いに国道169号線が走り,東は台高山脈によって三重県に接する。山腹のなだらかな土地を切り開いてできた林隙(りんげき)集落と,木材を集散するのに便利な位置にできた土場(どば)集落が,村内に散在する。中心集落は北西部にある迫(さこ)で,止雨,祈雨の神として知られる丹生川上神社上社がある。

かわかみ【川上[村]】

岡山県北端,真庭郡の村。人口2457(1995)。旭川の源流域に位置し,村域は蒜山(ひるぜん)盆地と大山((だいせん))に続く擬宝珠山(ぎぼしゆがせん)の山麓からなる。延助,郷原の集落はかつては大山往来の宿場町であった。1954年に国の集約酪農地域に指定されてから酪農が発達し,西茅場に中国四国酪農大学校,三木ヶ原に県立乳牛育成場がある。火山灰土の高原を利用した蒜山ダイコンの生産も多い。大山隠岐国立公園に属する北部の蒜山高原を中心とした観光開発も盛んで,大山と蒜山を結ぶ蒜山大山有料道路が通る。

かわかみ【川上[村]】

山口県中部,阿武郡の村。人口1250(1995)。碁盤ヶ岳などの小山地に囲まれ,村内を阿武川が西流する。山間に位置するため林業が盛んで,良質な杉やヒノキを産し,シイタケ栽培も行われる。ユズの栽培も盛んである。アユ漁も行われるが,阿武川ダムの完成後は漁獲が減少した。阿武川ダムは県営の洪水調節,発電用ダムとして1975年完成し,人造湖の湖底には6集落と長門峡の一部が水没した。梵鐘と庭園で知られる梅岳寺,歴史民俗資料館があり,紅葉で名高い長門峡は県立自然公園に指定されている。
