A city in northwest Florida, United States. It is located on the north shore of Pensacola Bay on the north shore of the Gulf of Mexico. The name comes from the Pensacola Indian tribe. A Spanish ship arrived in 1516, and settlement began in 1686. The city has changed hands several times, from Spain to France to Great Britain, but in 1821 it became a US territory. After the Civil War, forestry and fishing developed, followed by industry. Today, it is a commercial center with paper, building material, chemical, and other factories. It is home to a naval air station and the University of West Florida (established in 1967). Population 58,165 (1990).
