The name of an ancient kingdom in Central Asia. It is also called "Kuji." It is the site of present-day Kucha (庫車). During the Western and Eastern Han periods, it was an important place of cultural exchange, and Buddhism flourished there. It is the birthplace of the famous translator monk Kumarajiva. Later, at the end of the Tang period, temples and other buildings were destroyed by Muslim incursions, but in modern times excavations have uncovered many important Buddhist relics.
