A species of bird in the passerine family Mimus, or a general term for birds in the family Mimus. The mockingbird Mimus polyglottos (illustration) is about 25 cm long. At first glance it resembles a thrush, but it has a relatively long tail. Its back is gray, its flight feathers and central tail feathers are black, and its underside is white. The white band on its wings and the white outer tail feathers are very noticeable when it is flying. Its beak is slightly longer and thinner than that of thrushes, and its legs are weaker. It is found in the United States, Mexico, and the West Indies. It lives in bushes in farmland, near houses, and in parks, and feeds on about half berries, seeds, fruit, and other plant matter, and half insects.
