Keyboard - kiboudo (English)

A device that has keys for letters, numbers, symbols, etc. arranged according to a set pattern on a board, allowing direct input by pressing the keys. Used as an input device for computers, it is designed to send out signals corresponding to the keys. The input device originally used for typewriters is called a keyboard. It is also a general term for keyboards and keyboard instruments such as pianos and organs.

There are various types of keyboard layouts, but the most common is the QWERTY layout. It is so named because the letters in the upper left corner of the alphabet are arranged in QWERTY order, and this layout has been used since the typewriter era of the 19th century. Keyboards used on computers include the JIS 109 keyboard, which allows kana input, and the ASCII 101 keyboard, which allows only alphanumeric characters. There are also thumb shift keyboards developed by Fujitsu to make kana input more efficient, and Dvorak keyboards, which aim to achieve a similar effect in Western characters, but they are not widely used. There are also supplementary keyboards such as keyboards with only a numeric keypad that are attached to computers that do not have a numeric keypad (a combination of keys for numbers and arithmetic symbols), keyboards that combine function keys and tab keys used in programs, and ergonomic keyboards that reduce the burden on the user when inputting data based on ergonomics.

In DOS and previous Windows environments, the PS/2 (a 6-pin keyboard connector adopted by IBM that was also used to connect mice; so named because it was used in the PS/2 series of IBM computers) connection was the norm, while early Macs used ADB (an acronym for Apple Desktop Bus; a standard developed by Apple for connecting keyboards and other devices to computers; the technology that became the basis for USB) connections, so there was no compatibility between the two. Currently, USB connections are the norm for both. Wireless types that do not require cables are also on the rise.

文字や数字、記号などのキーが、盤上に一定の規則に従って配列されていて、それを押すことで直接入力できる機器のこと。コンピュータの入力機器として使われており、キーに対応した信号が送り出される仕組みになっている。もともとタイプライターに使われている入力装置をキーボードと称する。また、ピアノやオルガンなどの鍵盤、鍵盤楽器の総称でもある。

　キー配列には様々な種類があるが、もっとも一般的なのがQWERTY(クワーティー)配列である。アルファベット部分の左上の文字の並びが、順番にQWERTYになっているためそうよばれるが、この配列は19世紀のタイプライター時代から使われている。コンピュータで使われるものとして、かな入力ができるJIS配列の109キーボードと、英数字のみのASCII(アスキー)配列の101キーボードなどがある。キーの並びの配列では、富士通で独自開発した、かな入力の効率化を図った親指シフトのキーボードや、欧文における同様な効果を狙ったDvorak(ドボラック)配列のキーボードもあるが、広くは普及していない。その他、ノートパソコンなどテンキー（数字と演算記号のキーをまとめたもの）のついていないパソコンに取り付けるテンキーのみのキーボード、プログラムで使うファンクションキーやタブキーなどをまとめたキーボードなどの補助的な用途のものから、人間工学に基づいて使用者の入力に際しての負担を軽減したエルゴノミックス・キーボードなどもある。

　DOSや以前のWindows環境ではPS/2（IBMが採用した6ピンのキーボード用コネクタでマウスの接続にも使われたもの。IBMパソコンのPS/2シリーズに採用されたためそうよばれる）接続が、初期のMacではADB（Apple Desktop Busの頭文字で、アップルが開発したキーボードなどとコンピュータを接続するための規格。USBのベースにもなった技術）接続が主流だったためそれぞれに互換性がなかった。現在はともにUSB接続がメインになっている。また、ケーブルが要らないワイヤレスタイプなども増えている。
