A shallow inlet of the North Sea on the east coast of central England in the United Kingdom. It is about 32 km long and 24 km wide, and is surrounded by the counties of Lincolnshire and Norfolk. It was formed by a postglacial transgression, and the bay once extended as far as Cambridge and Peterborough, but was gradually filled in by rivers such as the Ouse, Nene, Welland, and Witham. The coastal area was a large marshland called the Fenland, and attempts to develop it had been made since Roman times, with drainage and reclamation works being completed in the 17th century.
