[ I ] Gold chloride(I): AuCl(232.42). Obtained by heating gold chloride(III) at 160°C. Pale yellow powder. Density 7.4 g cm -3. Decomposes to gold and chlorine when heated to 170°C. It is poorly soluble in water and decomposes in water to gold chloride(III) and gold. It dissolves in hydrochloric acid and aqueous alkali chloride solutions as [ AuCl2 ] - , but is unstable and disproportionates to Au and [ AuCl4 ] - . [CAS 10294-29-8] [ II ] Gold chloride(III): AuCl3 (303.33). When gold powder or gold foil is directly reacted with chlorine gas at 200°C or higher, it sublimes and precipitates as brown crystals. It can also be obtained by heating H[ AuCl4 ]・ 4H2O to 120°C. Density: 3.9 g cm -3 . Deliquescent. Easily soluble in water, ethanol, ether, dilute hydrochloric acid, etc., but insoluble in carbon disulfide. In aqueous solution, AuCl 3 + H 2 O → H 2 [AuCl 3 (O)] It exists in the form of tetrachloroaurate( III ) acid tetrahydrate, H[AuCl4]・ 4H2O , and is acidic. When crystallized from an aqueous solution, orange AuCl3 ・ 2H2O is obtained. In gas form, it exists as a dimer, Au2Cl6 . [CAS 13453-07-1] [III] Generally, gold chloride sold commercially is tetrachloroaurate(III) acid tetrahydrate, H[ AuCl4 ]・ 4H2O . It is used in photography, plating, inks, medical products (patch test reagents), ceramic decoration, and as a raw material for catalysts.
