The word "kaibutsu" (open things) comes from the phrase "kaibutsu seiwu" (open things and accomplish things) that appears in the Xiaoji Shangzhuan (textbook of the Book of Changes), meaning "to develop things and accomplish projects," and is a philosophy that emphasizes practical learning or technology. In 1637, Song Yingxing of China wrote a technical book titled "Tengou Kaibutsu (open things)." According to Hirone Saegusa's interpretation, tengou means natural forces in contrast to man-made things, and kaibutsu (open things) is man-made things that utilize this natural force. The book covers all the important industries in China at the time and provides commentary on them for intellectuals. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
