Awazu City - Awazunoichi

...Some of these early markets had a strong connection with the capital, and with the establishment of the capital, they were passed down to markets managed by city governors, such as the "ichi" of Fujiwara-kyo, the "tozai (east and west) markets" (Higashiichi and Nishiichi) after Heijo-kyo, and the "Naniwa-ichi" of Naniwa-kyo. In contrast, "Eka-ichi" and "Ato-kuwa-ichi" were markets located at key transportation points in Kawachi, but it can be assumed that markets existed in various places other than Kawachi, such as "Awazu-ichi" in Omi, which appears in the "Nihon Shoki" in the July Jinshi section of the 1st year of Tenmu (672). The above-mentioned markets continued to exist from the 8th century onwards, from the Nara period to the early Heian period, but in addition to them, "Abe-ichi" in Suruga Province appears in the "Manyoshu," "Ogawa-ichi" in Mino Province, "Fukatsu-ichi" in Bingo Province, "Uchi-no-ichi" in Yamato Province, and "ichi" in Kii Province also appear in the "Nihon Ryōiki." ...

Japanese:
