Pelotas (English spelling)

Pelotas (English spelling)
A city in the southern part of Rio Grande do Sul state, in the southernmost part of Brazil. The main settlement is about 210 km southwest of the state capital Porto Alegre, a port city near the western shore of the southern part of Lake Patos, overlooking the São Gonçalo Canal, which connects Lake Patos with Lake Mirim to the southwest. Built in 1780. With the rich agricultural and livestock areas in the southern part of the state behind it, it developed as the main shipping port. The city is a major trading center for agricultural and livestock products, mainly beef cattle and rice, and has factories for drying beef, meat processing, leather tanning, flour milling, and rice milling. The port is also important as a cargo transfer port, where cargo from oceangoing ships that travel up Lake Patos from the Atlantic Ocean via the Rio Grande is transferred to shallower ships and transported to the state capital on the northwestern shore of the lake. It is a transportation hub along the main road from the state capital to Uruguay, and is a junction for rail and road connections to the Rio Grande. Population: 289,494 (1991 estimate).
