Japanese:
Ano Zenjō
Year of death: 23 June 1203 (1 August 1203)
Year of birth: Nihei 3 (1153)
A military commander and monk in the early Kamakura period. The eldest son of Minamoto no Yoshitomo and Tokiwa. His childhood name was Imawaka. He was Yoritomo's half-brother and Yoshitsune's full brother. After the Heiji Rebellion (1159), he became a monk at Daigo-ji Temple and was called Daigo (Aku) Zenji Zensei. In 1180 (Jisho 4), upon hearing of Yoritomo's uprising, he immediately went down to Kanto and joined him. He was given Nagao-ji Temple in Musashi Province, and furthermore, he ruled Ano in Suruga Province, and took the name Ano Hokkyo. He married Awa no Tsubone, the daughter of Hojo Tokimasa, and she became the wet nurse of Chihata (later Sanetomo), so after Yoritomo's death, it is believed that he became embroiled in the conflict between the Hojo clan, who were trying to support Chihata, and the second shogun, Yoriie. In May 1203 (Kennin 3), he was exiled to Hitachi Province on suspicion of rebellion against Yoriie. He was killed in Shimotsuke Province the following month, and his son, Yorimasa, was also killed in Kyoto. His grave is at Daisen-ji Temple (Ide, Numazu City), which is on the site of the Ano mansion.
