...Broadcasting is carried out by geostationary satellites located in space about 36,000 km above the equator, and has the following characteristics:

(1) A single radio wave can be used to broadcast to the whole of Japan, including remote mountain areas and islands, or even a wider area, making it more economical to broadcast wide areas such as nationwide broadcasts than terrestrial broadcasting. (2) Terrestrial television broadcasts are prone to ghost interference, in which radio waves are reflected off buildings and other objects, causing the image to appear doubled or tripled, but satellite broadcasting does not suffer from this type of interference. (3) Satellite broadcasts often use 12 GHz radio waves, but these high-frequency radio waves are attenuated by heavy rain, causing television picture quality to deteriorate and sometimes even impossible to receive.
