The former name of a region in south-central France. It lies at the southeastern end of the Massif Central, bordering Auvergne to the north and Rouergue to the west. It is divided into north and south by the River Louthe, with the Aubrac and Margeride mountains to the north and the desolate limestone plateau of the Causses and the Cevennes region famous for the Camisard Rebellion to the south. Its capital, Mende, corresponds to the present-day Lozère department in the administrative divisions. Its rugged landscape makes a strong impression in the generally gentle French nature.
