Xanthine, a product of purine metabolism, is a congenital metabolic disorder in which a large amount of xanthine is present in the urine. It is thought to be caused by a lack of the enzyme (xanthine oxidase) that oxidizes xanthine to uric acid, or by increased excretion of xanthine in the kidneys. It sometimes causes xanthine stones.
