A state (land) in southwestern Germany. It has an area of 35,750 km2 and a population of 10.27 million (1995). Its capital is Stuttgart. Other major cities include Mannheim, Karlsruhe, Freiburg, and Heidelberg. It is located in the southwestern corner of Germany, and borders France to the west and Switzerland to the south. Historically, it is mainly based on the former German states of Baden (Grand Duchy) and Württemberg (Kingdom), but its direct predecessors were the three states of Württemberg-Baden (American occupied area), Württemberg-Hohenzollern, and Baden (French occupied area), which were created in 1945 after World War II. These were then united in 1952 based on the results of a referendum in 1951. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
