Baden-Württemberg

A state (land) in southwestern Germany. It has an area of 35,750 km2 and a population of 10.27 million (1995). Its capital is Stuttgart. Other major cities include Mannheim, Karlsruhe, Freiburg, and Heidelberg. It is located in the southwestern corner of Germany, and borders France to the west and Switzerland to the south. Historically, it is mainly based on the former German states of Baden (Grand Duchy) and Württemberg (Kingdom), but its direct predecessors were the three states of Württemberg-Baden (American occupied area), Württemberg-Hohenzollern, and Baden (French occupied area), which were created in 1945 after World War II. These were then united in 1952 based on the results of a referendum in 1951.

ドイツ南西部の州(ラント)。面積3万5750km2，人口1027万(1995)。州都シュトゥットガルト。おもな都市として他にマンハイム，カールスルーエ，フライブルク，ハイデルベルク等がある。ドイツの南西端に位置し，西はフランス，南はスイスと境を接している。歴史的にはドイツの旧領邦バーデン(大公国)とビュルテンベルク(王国)を主たる母体にしているが，直接の前身は第2次大戦後1945年につくられたビュルテンベルク･バーデン州(アメリカ占領地区)とビュルテンベルク･ホーエンツォレルン州およびバーデン州(フランス占領地区)の3州で，これが1951年の住民投票の結果に基づき52年に結合されてできた州である。
