Abbreviation: ABU. An organization of national broadcasting organizations of independent countries in the Asia-Pacific region. Founded in 1964, as of 2006, 50 organizations from 36 countries and regions are regular members, 29 organizations from 13 countries and regions are associate members, and 32 organizations from 23 countries and regions are associate members. The objectives of the organization's establishment were to protect the interests of its members, promote and coordinate research on broadcasting issues, exchange information, and promote the use of broadcasting in the fields of national development and education. Based on this objective, the organization coordinates and communicates with members on programming, news, copyrights, technology, training, etc., and also serves as a liaison office for negotiations with other organizations. The organization also co-produces educational programs and hosts the "ABU Award Programming Competition." Its secretariat is in Malaysia.
