The capital of the eponymous province in southeastern Poland. Population 213,800 (1995). Located in the center of the Śwętokrzska Mountains, it is an old town (first recorded in 1084) that developed in a small valley on the Nida River, part of the Vistula River system. It was originally a small agricultural center, but was blessed with resources such as copper ore, iron ore, and marble, and after the war the chemical, wood processing, and food industries, centered on the machinery and metal industries, developed rapidly.
