After dropping out of primary school, he became an apprentice to a merchant under his parents' family. At the age of 17, he became involved in politics. In 1937, he became a member of the Legislative Council, and in 1940, he became chairman of the Tamil Nadu National Congress Committee. From 1954 to 1963, he served as the Chief Minister of Madras, and in 1963, he became chairman of the All India National Congress.
