〘Noun〙 (also "bundo")① A weight used as a standard for weight when measuring weight on a scale. They are often made of metal and are cylindrical or bell-shaped. Houma (horseback) . Fundon. [Bunmeihon Setsuyoshu (mid-Muromachi period)] ※Kakushihon Furai Rokubushu (1780) - A comment on Hida Iwasa "This fundo (weight) is heavier than that one"② A lump of gold or silver cast in the shape of ①. Something stored for use in emergencies. ※Todai-ki (around 1615?) 4 "Lord Hideyori ordered gold and silver lumber to be covered, and for this purpose a golden fundo (blade of a thousand sheets of gold) was sent to Edo"③ (Because the shape of ① is cast on the back) A colloquial name for Nanryo's Nishu silver. ※Fuzoku Gaho, No. 53 (1893) Mangaroku: "In Tokyo, most signs have a fundo (weight) , but here we use a Kan'ei Tsūhō coin." ④ Something that is hung to be used as a weight or to maintain balance. ※Sooten (1909) <Morita Sohei> 1: "I tried to push the door open, but the fundo was not in good condition and it would not open." ⑤ The name of a crest. A stylized version of ①. Fundo, five fundo, etc.

Fundon [weight]

〘Noun〙 (A variant of "fundo (weight)")① A weight used as a standard for measurement. A weight attached to the end of something. By extension, it refers to the dofuguri (a fish ball) or daidai (a citrus fruit) attached to the end of a lottery ticket in a treasure draw. ※Essays, Dokusetsu (around 1724), part 2 "Just as one holds the rope of a lottery draw, I wonder which man has the radish loincloth attached to him." ② (From the common shape in ①) Something that is narrow in the middle. ※Miscellaneous haiku, Yanagi Taru-san (1768), "Without any effort to put on the loincloth, the bride is taken."

〘名〙 (「ぶんどう」とも)① 秤で重量を測定するとき、重量の標準として用いるおもり。多く金属製で筒形、釣鐘形のもの。法馬(ほうま)。ふんどん。〔文明本節用集(室町中)〕※滑稽本・風来六部集(1780)飛だ噂の評「あちらの物よりこちらの称錘(フンドウ)が重き故」② ①の形に鋳造した金や銀の塊。蓄えて非常の時の用に備えたもの。※当代記(1615頃か)四「秀頼公より金銀材木被調、此ために黄金の千枚吹のふんとうを江戸へ被下」③ (裏面に①の形が鋳込まれているところから) 南鐐の二朱銀の俗称。※風俗画報‐五三号(1893)漫録「東京にては大抵分銅(フンドウ)を看板にすれど、此地(ここ)にては寛永通宝の銭形を以てせり」④ おもりとしたり均衡をとったりするためにつりさげなどしたもの。※煤煙(1909)〈森田草平〉一「潜りを押さうとしたが、分銅の具合が悪くて開かない」⑤ 紋所の名。①を図案化したもの。分銅、五つ分銅など。

ふん‐どん【分銅】

〘名〙 (「ふんどう(分銅)」の変化した語)① 計量の標準とするおもり。物の先についたおもり。転じて、宝引(ほうびき)のくじの先についた胴ふぐりや橙(だいだい)をさしていう。※随筆・独寝(1724頃)下「いづれいづれ福引の縄をもちしごとく、大根のふんどんはどの男に付ている事やら」② (①によくある形であるところから) 中央がくびれている形のもの。※雑俳・柳多留‐三(1768)「ふんどんをはり合もなく娵は取り」
