Vegetable weevil (Listroderes obliquus)

Japanese: ヤサイゾウムシ(野菜象虫) - ヤサイゾウムシ（英語表記）Listroderes obliquus

Belonging to the family Curculionidae in the order Coleoptera, the adults and larvae damage the shoots and leaves of various vegetables, including Chinese cabbage (illustration). They are also found on wild plants such as dandelions and daisies, and have an extremely wide range of diet. Their body is brown and covered with scales and hairs. There are three raised stripes on the proboscis, and there is a pale pattern of scales in the center of the dorsal thorax and behind the elytra. The body length is about 9 mm. Although native to Brazil, it was first discovered in Okayama Prefecture in 1940, and is now distributed throughout Japan. No males have been found, and only females reproduce, laying eggs in the soil near the roots of plants.

甲虫目ゾウムシ科に属し，成虫，幼虫がハクサイをはじめ各種の野菜類の芽や葉を食害する（イラスト）。ハルジオン，ヒメジョオンなどの野草にも見られ，食性はきわめて広い。体は褐色で鱗片と毛を生ずる。口吻（こうふん）には3本の隆起条があり，胸部背面の中央および上翅の後方には鱗片からなる淡色紋がある。体長9mm内外。ブラジルが原産地であるが，1940年岡山県下で最初に発見され，今日では日本各地に分布する。雄は発見されず，雌のみで繁殖し，植物の根の付近の土中へ点々と産卵する。
