Police Station - Keisatsusho

A police station is a unit of police management at the front line of prefectural police. It is established as a police agency that has jurisdiction over each area of a prefecture (Article 53, Paragraph 1 of the Police Law). Each area of a prefecture belongs to the jurisdiction of one of the police stations, and the police station plays an important role in carrying out police affairs that are closely related to the lives of local residents. As of April 1, 2010, there are 1,184 police stations in Japan. The name, location, and jurisdiction of a police station are determined by ordinance in accordance with the Enforcement Order of the Police Law (Article 53, Paragraph 4 of the Police Law). The location of a police station is determined in consideration of the most convenient use for residents in the jurisdiction, taking into account contact with other public offices, transportation, communication, and other circumstances, while the jurisdiction is determined in consideration of the population, the jurisdiction of other public offices, transportation, geography, and other circumstances so that police duties can be carried out efficiently. Each station usually has 100 to 400 police officers, including the station chief. The structure of a police station is headed by the chief, with a deputy chief (assistant chief) and various divisions for police affairs, accounting, criminal investigation, traffic, security, public safety, and community affairs, as well as police boxes and police stations as subordinate organizations. Important ports and airports also have waterside (port) police stations and airport police stations. The 2000 revision of the Police Law required police stations to have "Police Station Councils." Police Station Councils are bodies that respond to inquiries from the police station chief regarding the handling of police affairs within the jurisdiction of the police station, and that express opinions to the police station chief (Article 53-2 of the Police Law). This is based on a recommendation made by the Police Reform Council, which was established in 2000 in response to police scandals, that it is necessary to take the opinions and requests of local residents seriously and respond to them in good faith.
