Vaishnava (English spelling) Vaiava

A sect of Hinduism that is divided into two sects, Shaivism and Vaishnavism, worshiping the supreme god Vishnu, his consort, and his incarnations. However, in reality, there is no single Vaishnavite sect, but rather a great number of sects, which are collectively called Vaishnavite, and their historical background is very complicated. First, the oldest sect is the Bhagavata sect. In ancient times, this sect called the supreme god Bhagavad, but over time, it came to be called Birthdayeva, Krishna, or Vishnu. Originally, it had no connection with Vishnu, but its complicated name suggests the process by which it gradually became Vaishnavite. This sect is thought to have been founded in the 5th or 4th century BC, and its doctrine can be considered to be included in the Bhagavad Gita. In addition, among the later Puranic texts, the Vishnu Purana and the Bhagavata Purana are said to be from this sect. Further derived from this sect are the Madhva sect founded by Madhva from Karnataka in South India, who preached a unique monism that at first glance seems pluralistic, the Visnusvāmin sect founded by Visnusvāmin (13th century), the Nimbarka sect founded by Nimbarka (14th century?), who based the worship of the shepherd Krishna and his lover Radha (Radika) on the doctrine of the Vedanta sect of essential non-dualism, the Ballabha sect founded by Ballabha from the Andhra region of South India, who preached pure non-dualism and was active in Brindavan, a holy place for the worship of Krishna in North India, and the Chaitanya sect founded by Chaitanya, who spread the worship of Krishna and Radha in East India and advocated the doctrine of mystical non-dualism. The Pancharātra sect occupies an important position in the Bhagavata stream. This sect's greatest characteristics are its worship of Narayana and its Tantrism-based tone, and it is believed that it probably began composing its scriptures around the 7th century. While the Bhagavata sect and its descendants preach the concept of incarnation, this sect preaches the concept of manifestation (byuha). The Pancharatra sect eventually influenced the Srivaishnava sect, which was popular in the Tamil region of southern India, and from this sect the Ramanuja sect, founded by Ramanuja (12th century), who preached the doctrine of the non-dual monism of the limited being, was derived, and from this sect Ramananda gave rise to various sects in northern India, such as the Ramananda sect, also known as the Rama sect.

シバ派と勢力を二分するヒンドゥー教の一派で、最高神ビシュヌ神とその神妃、化身を崇拝する。とはいえ、現実には、単一のビシュヌ派というものはなく、おびただしい数の派があって、それが全体としてビシュヌ派とよばれているにすぎず、その歴史的経緯は非常に錯綜(さくそう)している。まず、もっとも古い派としてはバーガバタ派があげられる。この派は、古くは最高神をバガバッドとよんだが、やがて、バースデーバとも、クリシュナとも、ビシュヌともよぶようになった。元来ビシュヌ神とは関連がなかったが、しだいにビシュヌ派となっていった過程を、その複雑な名称が暗示している。この派の成立は紀元前5、4世紀とみられ、その教義は『バガバッド・ギーター』のなかに盛り込まれていると考えることができる。また、後代のプラーナ文献としては、『ビシュヌ・プラーナ』『バーガバタ・プラーナ』がこの派のものであるとされる。この派からさらに派生したものとしては、一見多元論とみられる独得の一元論を説いた南インドのカルナータカの出身のマドバを開祖とするマドバ派、ビシュヌスバーミン（13世紀）を開祖とするビシュヌスバーミン派、牧人クリシュナとその愛人ラーダー（ラーデイカー）の崇拝を、本質的不一不異論ベーダーンタ派の教義のうえに基礎づけたニンバールカ（14世紀？）を開祖とするニンバールカ派、南インドのアーンドラ地方出身で、純粋不二一元論を説き、北インドのクリシュナ神崇拝の聖地ブリンダーバンを本拠地にして活躍したバッラバを開祖とするバッラバ派、東インドでクリシュナ、ラーダー崇拝を広め、不可思議不一不異論を唱えたチャイタニヤを開祖とするチャイタニヤ派などがある。このバーガバタ派の流れに対して、重要な位置を占めるのがパンチャラートラ派である。この派はナーラーヤナを崇拝し、タントリズムを基調としていることを最大の特徴とし、おそらく7世紀ころから聖典を作成し始めたとみられている。バーガバタ派とその系統が化身ということを説くのに対し、この派では顕現（ビユーハ）ということを説く。パンチャラートラ派は、やがて、南インドのタミル地方で流行したシュリーバイシュナバ派に影響を与え、この派から、被限定者不二一元論を唱えたラーマーヌジャ（12世紀）を開祖とするラーマーヌジャ派が派生し、ここから出たラーマーナンダによって、北インドに、ラーマ派とも称せられるラーマーナンダ派などの各派が生じていった。
