Mount Hermon

Japanese: ヘルモン[山]（英語表記）Mount Hermon

A mountain at the southern end of the Anti-Lebanon Mountains, on the border between Lebanon and Syria. It is 2,814 m above sea level. In Arabic, it is called Jabal al-Shaykh. It faces the Bekaa Plateau to the north and the Hauran Mountains to the south, which connect with the Syrian Desert. Its name is found in Assyrian, Phoenician, and the Old Testament because it is a mountain associated with mountain worship since ancient times, and it is also the highest mountain in Canaan. Remains of ancient worship remain at the second peak, Qaṣr Antar, some of which have been confirmed to date to the Roman period.

アンチ･レバノン山脈の南端，レバノンとシリアの国境にある山。標高2814m。アラビア語ではジャバル･アッシャイフJabal al‐Shaykh。北にベカー高原を望み，南はハウラーン山地からシリア砂漠とつらなる。アッシリア語，フェニキア語，そして旧約聖書にもその名をのこしているのは，古代以来の山岳信仰にかかわる山であるからで，カナン地方では最も高い山でもある。　古代信仰の遺跡は，第2峰のカスル･アンタルQaṣr Antarに残っているが，なかにはローマ時代のものと確認されているのもある。
