Born: January 12, 1580, Brussels [Died] December 30, 1644. Vilvoorde. Dutch physiologist, chemist, and physician. A pioneer of the medical chemistry school. He is said to have built a bridge between alchemy and chemistry. He entered the University of Leuven and studied a wide range of subjects. He eventually switched to medicine and traveled to Switzerland, Italy, France, England, and other places. He was devoted to Paracelsus and studied alchemy. This opened his eyes to chemistry. He settled in Vilvoorde from 1609 onwards, and devoted himself to chemical experiments and medicine until his death there. He discovered carbon dioxide, which he named gas. In his later years, his book on magnetic healing of wounds was questioned by the Jesuits as a heretical book that explained alchemical methods, and he was imprisoned twice after 1634, but was found innocent after his death.
