Born: April 23, 1598, Brielle Died August 9, 1653. Dutch military officer and admiral off the coast of Scheveningen. In 1609, he was captured by pirates off the coast of Guinea while sailing, and escaped two years later. In 1622, he joined the Dutch Navy, and in 1624, he became a captain. In 1637, he became a vice admiral. In 1639, he defeated a large pirate fleet off the coast of Graveline, and a Spanish fleet near the Downs in England. In 1652, he led a fleet that clashed with the English fleet under Admiral R. Blake, which sparked the First Anglo-Dutch War. Although he defeated Blake's fleet once in the same year, he was defeated by attacks from Blake's fleet in February and June of the following year, and died on board a ship in August after being shot by a rifle.
