Giant snake shell (Serpulorbis imbricatus)

Japanese: オオヘビガイ(大蛇貝) - オオヘビガイ（英語表記）Serpulorbis imbricatus

As its name suggests, the shell coils up like a snake and attaches to rocks (illustration). It is a gastropod shell of the Vermetidae family. Although the shell coils, it is irregular and does not show a consistent height or thickness, but the round tube is about 1.5 cm in diameter. Those on top of rocks are round and flat, with a coiled diameter of about 5 cm and a height of about 2 cm, but those under rocks can grow long and uncoiled. They do not coil down like normal shells, but rather coil up, giving them an appearance of being left-handed. There are thin vertical ribs on the surface of the shell that intersect with the growth veins and are brownish in color.

名のように殻はヘビのとぐろのように巻いて岩に固着する（イラスト）。ムカデガイ科の巻貝。殻は巻くが不規則なので一定の高さや太さは示せないが，まるい管の太さは直径1.5cmくらいになる。岩の上についているのはまるく平たく巻径5cm，高さ2cmくらいになるが，岩の下にいるのは巻かず長くのびることもある。ふつうの貝のように巻き下がれず，逆に巻き上がるために見かけ上左巻となる。殻の表面には縦に細い肋があって成長脈と交わり，褐色を帯びる。
