Pleurospermum austriacum (L.) Hoffm.ssp.uralense (Hoffm.) Somm.
A perennial herb of the Apiaceae family that grows in mountainous regions and northern grasslands (illustration). The stem is erect, reaches a height of about 1m, and is hollow from the base to the tip, with no septa. The lower leaves have long petioles and are 2-3 times pinnate. The upper leaves become gradually smaller and have shorter petioles. There are hair-like thin projections on the veins and leaf edges. Flowers appear in July and August in numerous compound umbels at the ends of the stems and twigs, with involucre bracts at the base of the inflorescence. There are five small, white petals that roll inward at the tips. The fruit is 6-7mm long, ovoid, and almost spherical in cross section, with raised ribs and small projections on the back of the caryopsis.
