Upper Memory AreaMemory area from 640KB to 1MB defined by XMS, the memory management specification for MS-DOS. Normally, this area is reserved for system use and cannot be used freely, but if you use memory management software that supports XMS on an i386 or higher computer, you can move device drivers and resident software to this area to increase the free space in the convention memory. XMSUnified Memory ArchitectureA technology that uses part of the main memory as memory for displaying graphics. It was developed by VESA, the organization that standardizes graphics standards for PC/AT compatible machines. Using UMA slows down processing speed, but eliminates the need for memory for displaying graphics, reducing the cost of the computer.
