Taghaza (English spelling)

This was once a rock salt producing area in the western Sahara Desert in North Africa, at the northern edge of what is now the Republic of Mali. For over 600 years, from the time of the Kingdom of Ghana in the 8th century to the times of the Mali Empire and Songhai Empire, Taghaza supplied rock salt to the black empires that flourished on the southern edge of Western Sahara, and brought prosperity to these empires through trade between salt and the gold of the black countries. The Arab traveler Ibn Battuta, who visited this salt town in 1352, stayed there for about 10 days and wrote an account of his experiences. At that time, Taghaza had a rock salt layer about 2 km square, and it seems that it had a population of 1,000 to 2,000.

北アフリカのサハラ砂漠西部，現在のマリ共和国北端にかつてあった岩塩の産地。おそらく8世紀のガーナ王国の時代からマリ帝国，ソンガイ帝国の時代まで，600年余りにわたって，これら西サハラ南縁に栄えた黒人帝国に岩塩を供給し，塩と黒人の国の金との交易によってそれらの帝国に繁栄をもたらした。1352年にこの塩の町を訪れたアラブの旅行家イブン･バットゥータは10日ほど滞在して見聞記を残している。当時タガザには2km四方くらいの岩塩の層があり，1000～2000人の住民がいたらしい。
