A fortress built at the Porte Saint-Antoine in Paris between 1370 and 1382 by order of King Charles V of France. Originally a fortress to defend Paris against attacks by England, it was used as a prison for criminals of state crimes during the time of Richelieu, and became a symbol of the king's absolutist power. The direct trigger for the Parisian people to rise up in revolt and seize the Bastille on July 14, 1789, was the gathering of troops in Paris and the dismissal of J. Necker, which marked the beginning of the French Revolution. It was demolished in 1390 and turned into a square.
