Color field painting

It is translated as painting of a field of color. It is borrowed from the concept of field in physics and Gestalt psychology. In 1950, American poet Charles Olson advocated "field poetry" in Projective Verse , and in 1956, art critic Greenberg called Newman's work "field painting" in Painting the American Type. Of course, it can be said that all excellent works have an integrated whole, but in this case, it refers to paintings that are seen as a whole, blurring the distinction between ground and figure, rejecting the plastic relationship between form and color, as opposed to the abstraction of the past. This structure is also common to Pollock, but it has come to be called especially for Newman, Rothko, and Steele, who aimed for color expression, and Lewis, Frankenthaler, Noland, and Kelly, who were influenced by them, and the word color has been added. It is characterized by the use of expression using the same or close hues, and similar scales of lightness and saturation. Also, the paintings of Noland and Kelly at one stage are known as hard-edge in terms of technique.

色彩の場の絵画と訳される。物理学およびゲシュタルト心理学のフィールド＝場の概念から借用された。1950年アメリカの詩人チャールズ・オルスンが『投影詩論』Projective Verseのなかで「場の作詩」を唱え、1956年美術批評家グリーンバーグが『アメリカ型の絵画』のなかで、ニューマンの作品を「場の絵画」とよんだ。もちろん優れた作品はすべて統合された全体を有しているといえるが、この場合は、かつての抽象に対立するものとして地と図の区別をあいまいとし、形体と色彩の造形的な関係を拒絶し、全体としてみられる絵画をさしている。この構造はポロックとも共通するが、とくに色彩表現をもくろんだニューマン、ロスコ、スティール、彼らの影響を受けたルイス、フランケンサーラー、ノーランド、ケリーに対して称されるようになり、色彩の語が付加された。同一ないし近接した色相、類似のスケールをもつ明度、彩度による表現をとっている点に特色がある。また、ノーランド、ケリーの一時期の絵画は技巧上、ハード・エッジとよばれている。
