A large perennial plant of the Cyperaceae family that grows in marshes near the coast (illustration). Its other name, Shishikirigaya, means that this species' sturdy leaves have sharp sawtooth edges that can even cut wild boars. It grows on short rhizomes to form large colonies. The stems are thick and cylindrical, reaching a height of over 2m, with nodes and leaves. The leaves are broad linear, about 1cm wide, and can grow to nearly 1m in length. They are hard, leathery, slightly grayish green, and have very sharp sawtooth edges. From August to October, it produces large panicles up to 60cm long, and numerous small brown spikelets grow densely. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
