? - Early scholastic philosopher and grammarian, c.1130. His Latin name was Bernardus. He was one of the leaders of the Chartres School. Born in Brittany, he taught logic and grammar at the school attached to Chartres Cathedral from 1114 onwards. In 1119 he became chancellor. In 1124 he taught philosophy in Paris, where he had such outstanding students as John of Salisbury and Gilbertus Polletanus. He later became bishop of Chartres. He is considered the foremost Platonist of his time, and in his Commentary on Porphyry he compares Plato and Aristotle, and in accordance with Platonism and Eriugena he presents an organic view of the world in which God, idea and matter are the three invisible principles, and the natural world is a manifestation of the idea within God.
