…Even during this period, the Assyrian dynasty continued to exist in the ancient city of Assur from around 1670 BC onwards, and its king list has been handed down. After a long period of dormancy, in the mid-14th century BC, Assur-uballit I (reigned 1365-1330 BC) appeared, allied with the Hittite king, and after 1350 BC, attacked Mitanni, regained northern Mesopotamia, and once again established a wealthy and powerful kingdom. The king was the first to name Assyria, which had been called Subartu, "the land of Assur," called himself the Great King, negotiated with Egypt on an equal footing, and intervened in Babylonian politics. …
