Kinuwaba - Kinuwaba

Japanese: キンウワバ - きんうわば

A general term for insects belonging to the Lepidoptera, Noctuidae, subfamily Plusinae. A medium-sized moth with a span of about 3 cm, it is so named because its forewings, or upper wings, have gold or silver metallic markings. There are about 250 species distributed around the world, with 53 species found in Japan. They produce endemic species in every environment, from the Arctic to the tropics. They are generally nocturnal, but often fly to flowers in the evening to suck nectar. There are many species in temperate zones, and some species are migratory, moving north along the mainland as autumn approaches while continuing to breed.

鱗翅目ヤガ科キンウワバ亜科Plusinaeに属する昆虫の総称。開張3cm内外の中型のガで，前翅，すなわち上翅に金色または銀色の金属様の光沢をもつ斑紋があるためにこの名がある。世界におよそ250種が分布し，日本では53種が発見されている。北極圏から熱帯地方まで，あらゆる環境に応じて固有の種を産する。一般に夜行性であるが，夕刻ごろ吸みつのために花に飛来することも多い。温帯には種数も多く，一部の種には移動性があり，秋に向かって繁殖を続けながら本土を北上する。
