One of the medical systems in the People's Republic of China. After liberation, a medical insurance system was established for employees of state agencies and factory workers in China, but the vast majority of the population in rural areas was left to their own devices. In 1957, a production battalion in Guangdong created a system in which each member contributed 1 yuan per year, and the production battalion and the battalion each paid an equivalent amount (for example, 1 yuan each) to provide necessary medical care. This system, called cooperative medical care, spread throughout the country along with the people's commune system, and together with the "barefoot doctors," contributed to maintaining the health of rural residents.
