This refers to the condition in which two or more fetuses are present in the womb at the same time. Twins are relatively common, but there are rare cases of triplets or quadruplets. As the number of fetuses increases, the frequency decreases, but there are cases in which the fetuses are delivered safely and survive. Recently, the use of ovulation-inducing drugs has led to an increase in the number of multiple births of three or more fetuses. Multiple births are more likely to cause complications during pregnancy and childbirth.
