1737‐1814 French author. Born in Le Havre in northern France, he was a dreamy, emotionally unstable man who, after qualifying as a civil engineer, traveled early to the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, and Russia, and in 1768 he went to the French Isle (now Mauritius) in the Indian Ocean, where he stayed until 1770. After returning to Japan, he met Rousseau in Paris and was deeply influenced by him. After publishing his debut work, A Voyage to the Isle of France, in 1773, he devoted himself to writing Studies of Nature, which aimed to prove God through the wonders of the natural world, and in 1784 he published the first three volumes, which were a great success.
