Sea cliffs

A cliff or steep slope formed by the erosion of land by waves. On the seaward side of a sea cliff, there is a flat rock shelf called a wave-cut shelf, and a shallow reef called a sea-cut platform. At the bottom of the sea cliff, a depression called a wave-cut depression and a sea cave are carved. The slope of a sea cliff varies depending on the structure and hardness of the rocks. The height of a sea cliff is high where it faces the open ocean with rough waves, and low in inner bays with weak waves. Sea cliffs are generally made of fresh exposed rock, but older sea cliffs that have risen from the water are overgrown with grass and trees. Sea cliffs are usually several to several tens of meters high, but some reach 258 meters, such as the Maden Cliff in Kuniga, Oki Islands.

波浪によって陸地が侵食されて形成された崖(がけ)あるいは急斜面。海食崖の海側には、波食棚(だな)とよばれる平坦(へいたん)な岩棚や、海食台とよばれる浅い暗礁がみられる。海食崖の下部には、波食窪(くぼ)とよばれるくぼみや、海食洞がうがたれる。海食崖の勾配(こうばい)は岩石の構造や硬さなどによって異なる。海食崖の高さは波の荒い外洋に面した所では大で、波の弱い内湾では小さい。一般に海食崖は新鮮な露岩からなるが、離水した古い海食崖は草や樹木が繁茂する。海食崖の高さは数メートルから数十メートルのものが普通であるが、隠岐(おき)島前(どうぜん)の国賀(くにが)の魔天崖のように258メートルに達するものもある。
