In 1906, the Russo-Japanese War led to the opening of the Gyeongui Railroad from Seoul to Sinuiju, and the Yalu River Iron Bridge (944m) connecting the city to Andong on the opposite bank was completed in 1911. As a result, the center of the economy and administration moved to Sinuiju, and Uiju retreated to a small city in the mountains.
