She was the mother of John the Baptist and a relative of Mary, the mother of Jesus. She is mentioned in the Gospel of Luke, chapter 1. Her husband was Zacharias. Both of them gave birth to John in their old age. After the Annunciation, Mary went to Elizabeth's house to greet her and recite the Magnificat (1:39-56).
