The word originates from the ancient Greek lyra, a poem sung to the lyra (harp). In other words, it originates from a time when music and poetry were undifferentiated, and when there was no clear distinction between the description of an event and the expression of the emotions that accompanied it. While epic poetry expresses an objective event in its "objective" nature, as the development of past events, and dramatic poetry expresses an action toward a future conclusion, lyric poetry is in the present tense and expresses subjective emotions in its "state" nature. Therefore, it is shorter than other genres, and has a tendency toward pure poetry. It is classified into purely lyric poetry, such as love poetry, and intellectual poetry, such as meditative poetry.
